Once a thriving rest stop for travelers heading west from Arizona to California, Desert Center was founded in 1921 by an entrepreneur, family man, poet and risk-taker. Its spirit still lives among the abandoned buildings. I can imagine the stories of the people who ate, slept and pumped gas here. It feels like a place I've been to a hundred times. Or have I only visited here in my dreams?
