Quotes and Apple Trees
I love books in general, but photo books have a special place in my heart and on my bookshelves. Two that are favorites this year:
Duet on the Apple Blossom by Barbara Bosworth and Jem Southam is a beautiful example of collabortion, long distance at that. Bosworth photographed an apple tree in New England and Southam photographed one in England. It’s published by Dust Collective 2024. The pages were not marked as to which photographer was responsible for a particular image. I liked not knowing. It gave me room to just enjoy the walk through the landscapes. The images are lovely and serene.
Words That Helped by Robert Adams and published by Steidl is full of quotations that the photographer has collected through the years. My own journals contain quotes that I love, and poetry books are always close when I’m looking for inspiration. I know I’ll be going back to this book again and again. Pages are already dogeared with my favorite quotes.
“An artist is one. who can fail and fail and still go on.” — Agnes Martin
“May what was beautiful
In all they said and did
Or thought and left unsaid
Flow to them like a river
And comfort them forever.”
— Wendell Berry, from a Timbered Choir
Happy reading!
